Sculptor,
Anita Rivera deconstructed poetic text written by Year 2 pupils
from St. Paul's & All Hallows Primary School in order to
make a 7 metre stainless steel sculpture, sited near Stonebridge
Lock, Tottenham Marshes.
The Sculpture, in the form of a spiral scroll, represents a
physical and spiritual journey. It has been set into the ground
and is integral to the siting of three new oak benches making
an interactive yet contemplative space.
The artist, Lee Valley Park Rangers and poet Katherine Gallagher,
accompanied the children on a site visit, providing information
& inspiration to the group. This was followed by poetry
workshops led by Anita and Katherine at the school. Anita then
wrote their words on stainless steel, instead of paper, using
an angle grinder as a pen. The new collective poem fragments
the text, which appears as remnants of the children's experience.
As you walk around the sculpture the words, and consequently
the meaning, will change with the refraction of the sunlight.
The progress of the project has been videoed by Factory 21,
a training initiative for local unemployed young people.
The opening celebration at Stonebridge Lock on Thursday 15th
June 2000 included a performance of poetry by the pupils of
At. Paul's and All Hallows Primary School, directed by poet
Katherine Gallagher
